Here is “Puddle saves the day,” a 3D puzzle-platformer game concept that I was able to prototype with four other game designers and one music and sound designer. In this game, you play as a sponge whose goal is to put out fires. I created a sandbox-style executable to showcase a unique character and the intuitive mechanics that support it.

In particular, I created several visual special effects to communicate clearly what’s happening on screen and to provide an enjoyable gameplay experience. Given that this was such a basic prototype, I wanted all the features to be fully polished so that players could easily envision a complete game based on it.

This prototype features a fire-fighting sponge that can soak up water and then spray it onto the flames. I devised an interesting moveset that creates a contrast between the sponge’s “small and dry” form with light movements, a double jump, and increased movement speed ; and its “large and wet” form with an almost nonexistent jump and very slow movement, in exchange for carrying the water, which represents the win condition.

Beyond these parameters, I worked with the other game designers on the character’s affordance and gameplay building blocks to create mechanics such as the “Scratch” ability on walls with the green side of the sponge, or the “Soap” that becomes slippery when the sponge is wet.

This project was fairly short and was intended to give me practice in the early stages of production. I was in charge of creating a comprehensive and clear document to explain the concept to a potential investor.

This document is intended to outline the main mechanics and the player experience, but I also added a “references” section to help my audience better visualize the project and relate it to something familiar and already in existence.

In order to present the various features separately and showcase a glimpse of each one’s potential, I designed a two-part sandbox. The first part is a large stage for players to familiarize themselves with the controls and metrics, featuring small scenarios that illustrate the fun associated with each mechanic independently. The second part is a blockout of an entire level where the features are pitted against one another to show what the game would look like if production were to continue.

Another part of my contribution to this project focused on visual effects. I wanted the few mechanics included, though not numerous, to have a high level of polish so they would be enjoyable to use.

I created the fire effect to learn how noise and textures work in Unreal Engine. I also worked on the water visuals to make them both realistic and visible as a level design element. To do this, I created a custom material to adapt the texture to any type of surface and modeled various puddles.

Finally, I designed camera effects to add dynamism and emphasize the change in scale, which is the USP of this concept.
